Black As He's Painted - first book by Ngaio Marsh a have read and met elegant and clever superintendant Alleyn. This novel ist little bit political and I liked the way Alleyn solved case in delicate situation in consulat of one African state. /
Čierny ako na portréte je prvá kniha, ktorú som čítala od Ngaio Marsh a stretla v nej elegantného a múdreho superintendanta Alleyna. Román je trochu politický a mne sa páčil spôsob, akým Alleyn vyriešil prípad v delikátnej situácii na konzuláte jednoho afrického štátu.
But I must say that level of her books varies. In my opinion the best are those from theatrical or artistic milieu, which she knew very well (Death at the Dolphin, False Scent, Photo Finish, Artists in Crime, Final Curtin, Opening Night, Enter a Murderer...) and witty Singing in the Shrouds and Clutch of Constables too. They contain not many - if any, „dumb parts“ and lot of brilliant extracts – I enjoyed for instance descriptions of work of Alleyn’s wife, artist Troy, especially at the begin of Artists in Crime, where they knew each other on ship by Troy’s painting and in Photo Finish, descriptions of scenes (at the begin of Artists in Crime) – they are like finely painted with pastel, substantial portrayal of characters and their motives. In opposite to these I could hardly read till the end Dead Water, Grave Mistake, Colour Scheme, When in Rome and Off With His Head, where nice parts are changed by boring and slow-gaited ones, the solutions of crime depends on seconds and milimeters, on complicated and incomprehensible description of crime scene and removal of concerned persons ( especially in Off With His Head). So it seems to me, like it all was written not by one, but two different persons... /
Musím ale povedať, že úroveň jej kníh sa mi zdá veľmi kolísavá. Najlepšie sú podľa mňa tie z divadelného a umeleckého prostredia, ktoré dôverne poznala (Smrť v Delfíne, Omamná vôňa, Smrť s fotografiou, Mistři zločinu, Posledná opona, Vražda na premiére, Vrah na scéne,...), ale aj vtipný Zpěv v ráhnoví a Příliš mnoho konstáblů, v ktorých je len málo - ak vôbec, "hluchých miest" a veľa brilantných pasáží. Uchvátili ma napríklad opisy práce Alleynovej manželky, maliarky Troy - hlavne v Mistři zločinu, na začiatku, kde sa zoznámila s Alleynom a v Smrť s fotografiou, opisy prostredia (Mistři zločinu - úvod) - tiež akoby jemne načrtnuté pastelkou, presvedčivé a jasné vykreslenie charakterov a ich pohnútok. Naproti tomu len horko-ťažko som dočítala do konca napr. Mrtvá voda, Vážna chyba, Osudná vada, Tenkrát v Římě a Smrt za zimního slunovratu, kde sa pekné pasáže striedajú s nudnými, zdĺhavými a kde riešenie zločinu závisí od sekúnd a milimetrov a od komlikovaného a nezrozumiteľného popisu miesta činu a presunov zúčastnených (hlavne v Smrt za zimního slunovratu). Takže sa mi zdá, akoby tie knihy nepísala jedna, ale dve rozdielne osoby...
